Freight Class Calculator: NMFC Density Code

Calculate NMFC Freight Class based on density (PCF).

What is Freight Class?

Freight Class is a standardized classification system used by LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers to price shipping. It is defined by the NMFTA and is primarily based on the density of the item.

Density to Class Chart

Density to Class Chart Data Table
Density (lbs/ft³)Freight Class
50 or greaterClass 50 (Cheapest)
30 to 50Class 60
15 to 22.5Class 85
10.5 to 12Class 100
6 to 8Class 150
Less than 1Class 500 (Most Expensive)

How to Calculate Density (PCF)

  1. Measure the Length, Width, and Height of the pallet in inches.
  2. Multiply L × W × H to get Cubic Inches.
  3. Divide Cubic Inches by 1,728 to get Cubic Feet.
  4. Divide the Weight (lbs) by Cubic Feet to get Density (Pounds per Cubic Foot).

Shipping FAQs

Does class affect price?

Yes. Lower classes (like 50) represent dense, sturdy items (like bricks) and are cheaper to ship. Higher classes (like 500) represent light, bulky, or fragile items (like ping pong balls) and are expensive.
