Freight Class Calculator: NMFC Density Code
Calculate NMFC Freight Class based on density (PCF).
What is Freight Class?
Freight Class is a standardized classification system used by LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers to price shipping. It is defined by the NMFTA and is primarily based on the density of the item.
Density to Class Chart
| Density (lbs/ft³) | Freight Class |
|---|---|
| 50 or greater | Class 50 (Cheapest) |
| 30 to 50 | Class 60 |
| 15 to 22.5 | Class 85 |
| 10.5 to 12 | Class 100 |
| 6 to 8 | Class 150 |
| Less than 1 | Class 500 (Most Expensive) |
How to Calculate Density (PCF)
- Measure the Length, Width, and Height of the pallet in inches.
- Multiply L × W × H to get Cubic Inches.
- Divide Cubic Inches by 1,728 to get Cubic Feet.
- Divide the Weight (lbs) by Cubic Feet to get Density (Pounds per Cubic Foot).
Shipping FAQs
Does class affect price?
Yes. Lower classes (like 50) represent dense, sturdy items (like bricks) and are cheaper to ship. Higher classes (like 500) represent light, bulky, or fragile items (like ping pong balls) and are expensive.
