FFMI Calculator: Fat-Free Mass Index
Calculate your Fat-Free Mass Index to measure muscle potential.
What is FFMI?
Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) is an alternative to BMI that accounts for muscle mass. It is used to determine the amount of muscle a person carries relative to their height.
The Scale
- 18 - 20: Average male.
- 20 - 22: Athletic / Distinct musculature.
- 23 - 25: Elite natural bodybuilder limit.
- 26+: Generally considered unattainable naturally (suggests steroid use).
Fitness FAQs
Why is BMI bad for bodybuilders?
BMI only looks at weight and height. A muscular athlete might be classified as 'obese' by BMI, whereas FFMI correctly identifies that weight as muscle.
Is 25 truly the natural limit?
It is a statistical guideline based on pre-steroid era bodybuilders. Some genetic outliers may push slightly past 25, but it is rare.
