The Army 'Tape Test'
If a soldier exceeds the weight-for-height tables, the Army uses a circumference-based method to estimate body fat. This is known as the Tape Test (AR 600-9).
How to Measure
- Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple).
- Waist (Men): Measure at the navel (belly button).
- Waist/Hips (Women): Measure at the narrowest point of the abdomen and the widest point of the hips/buttocks.
- All measurements should be taken to the nearest half-inch.
Army Standards FAQs
Is this calculator accurate?
It is accurate to the Army formula, but the formula itself can have a margin of error compared to DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing.
What is the max body fat allowed?
It depends on age and gender. For example, a male aged 17-20 is allowed 20% body fat, while a male aged 28-39 is allowed 24%.
