The Myth of '7 Dog Years'

The old rule that 1 dog year equals 7 human years is too simple. Dogs mature rapidly in their first two years and then age more slowly. Furthermore, large dogs tend to age faster than small dogs in their later years.

How Dogs Age

 1. Year 1: A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old teenager.
 2. Year 2: At 2 years, they are about 24 in human years.
 3. Year 3+: Each subsequent year adds about 4 to 5 human years, depending on the breed size.

Pet Health FAQs

Why do small dogs live longer?

The biological reason isn't fully understood, but large dogs tend to suffer from age-related diseases (like cancer) earlier than small breeds.
